Birthmother Services

Why adoption is a loving choice

The greatest gift a mother can give a child is the gift of life in a safe nurturing environment in which God's love is evident. It takes maturity for someone with an unplanned pregnancy to choose adoption. The choice of adoption is a loving act of selflessness that places the needs of the child first. Through an adoptive placement the birthmother provides her child with a loving stable environment in which to grow.

How can we help you?

The professional staff of An Open Door Adoption Agency provides counseling for birthparents and their families which is confidential and personal. Your consultant helps you evaluate, without pressure, whether adoption or some other plan is best for you and your child. If you choose to pursue adoption, your consultant will help you arrange for prenatal care. The agency will also assist in providing medical care, transportation, food and housing. Your consultant can help you plan for your future.

You may select a family from life books or photo albums showing the families' homes and things they enjoy doing, to give you an understanding of the life they would offer your child. All of our families are wonderfully qualified Christian families who have been studied carefully to insure that they would provide a nurturing and secure home for your child.

Your consultant will support you through labor and delivery. After delivery, birthmothers must wait at least twenty-four hours before signing legal papers surrendering their parental rights to the child. After signing surrenders, the birthmother has ten days in which to change her mind. Your child will go to the family which you have selected, and a consultant will continue to visit the adoptive home to insure that your child is being well cared for.

The agency will handle all legal matters involved in the surrender or termination of birthfather rights. The agency can continue to provide support for you for a time after placement to help you get reestablished. We are always available for counseling as long you may need it. You can receive photographs of your child and letters from the family each month for the first six months and each year around the child's birthday until they reach eighteen. You can also submit your name on the Reunion Registry in Atlanta, where the child can find you once they are of age.

In order for you to begin to select your adoptive family, a few of our waiting families appear on the web page entitled Waiting Adoptive Couples. Use this part of our web site to find couples typical of those who are waiting to love and nurture your child. More couples will be available through the agency and your consultant than are shown on the site. The agency will provide a consultant for you close to where you live. Couples are waiting in a number of states. An Open Door places the choice of your child's family in your hands.
