Does the birth father have any rights?
Yes, but his rights are different than your rights as the baby's legal parent at the time of birth. We try to enlist the cooperation of the birth father, but if he is not cooperative, we will proceed with having the court terminate his rights.
You will need to provide An Open Door with any information that you have regarding the birth father. If you are unsure about where the birth father is, we are required by law to try and locate him. If you do not know the identity of the birth father, there are still several options for terminating birth father right.
Is adoption permanent?
Yes. Soon after you sign your release of parental rights, the adopting couple submits their adoption petition to the court and the child legally becomes a permanent member of the adoptive family.
Can my child find me in the future?
According to current Georgia laws at the time a child
turns 18 in Georgia, if he or she decides to search for
their birth parents, they will have access to identifying
information about you only if you have filed your name
and address with the Birth Parent Registry in the state
capital. If future contact is acceptable to you, all
you need to do is keep your address current with the Registry
and An Open Door.
