How do we get started?

Should you choose the Azerbaijan program, there are three steps that you should focus on concurrently beginning as soon as possible. They are the Adoption Application, Home Study Application and Application to the Citizenship and Immigration Service (I-600A). The process is described as follows:

  1. Application: You should begin by sending in your application to the Open Door Adoption Agency, Inc. This is a very important step as it will initiate the sending of your service agreement and subsequently dossier instructions which will include all agency and country specific forms that you will need.

  2. Equally important you will become registered for the adoption program of your choice which will then enable us to keep you properly informed of what is happening in the country you have chosen. Foreign adoption regulations can change suddenly, and it is important that we establish an open line of communication with you.

  3. Home Study: If you live in Georgia, the Open Door can perform your home study for you and you should indicate a desire for this service on your adoption application. If you do not reside in Georgia, please feel free to contact our office for a recommendation to a service agency in your state.

  4. It is important that you begin your home study as soon as possible because this process generally averages 90 days for completion depending on individual state required clearances and processing times.

  5. CIS Application (I-600A): Because you are adopting a child internationally, you will need to obtain permission from the US Citizenship and Immigration Service for your child to enter the United States. To do so, you will need to complete an I-600A application. You may obtain this form by going in person to your local CIS office, by calling the CIS forms line at: (800) 870-3676 or by downloading the form from the CIS website at: http://uscis.gov/graphics/formsfree/forms/ and scrolling down I-600A.
**Important Note: Although the I-600A application requests that you submit an approved home study along with your application, just include a note that states your home study will follow when completed. It can take approximately 60-90 days for CIS fingerprint checks, so it is best to begin their fingerprint clearance process at the time you begin your home study. Processing will be faster if you specify “for Adoption” on the outside of the envelope in the bottom left corner.
