Travel Information
Two very short trips are required to complete the adoption process. If married, both parents must travel on the first trip and one may travel on the second trip, with certain documents from the non-traveling spouse.
The first trip, which requires 2 full business days in Azerbaijan, occurs approximately 8-12 weeks after accepting a referral of a child. Typically, you will meet your child the first day and go to court the next day or later, if so desired. You will then return to Azerbaijan approximately 30 days after your court hearing to complete the adoption process and bring your child home.
On the second trip, which should be approximately 4 business days in Azerbaijan, you will pick up your child, obtain documents from the Azerbaijan government (birth certificate, adoption decree and child's passport) and go to the US Embassy in Tbilisi, Georgia for the Orphan Investigation. You then will stay in Tbilisi for approximately 2 days, so that your child can be seen by a panel physician as required by the U.S. Consulate, and apply for the child's Immigrant Visa at the Consulate. Registration of your adopted child with the Azerbaijan Embassy in Washington, D.C. is now required by all adoptive parents.
Families traveling to Azerbaijan will be met and assisted throughout the adoption process in Azerbaijan and Tbilisi.
