Travel Information
Either one parent or both may travel. If only one parent travels, you must submit a power of attorney giving the spouse who travels permission to complete the adoption. An Open Door will assist you with that document.
Adoptive families travel in small groups to China. Travel is for 12 to 14 days depending on whether you take a tour of Beijing. The Beijing tour is offered two days prior to receiving your baby. Following the Beijing tour, you will travel to the province where you will adopt your child. Our facilitator will arrange for all the domestic flights within China for you. You will spend about six days in the province your child is from to complete the adoption then travel to the city of Guangzhou for six days. There you will obtain the child's immigrant visa to allow you to bring your child to the US.
One great benefit of adopting from China is that you travel in groups with other families who are also adopting. You will not travel to China with all the families in your group but will meet them once you arrive. Once our facilitator tells us when you will need to be in China. You will plan your flights in and out of China. Our facilitator will make all the arrangements for all transportation (flights/ trains/ buses) within China. One of our representatives will meet you at the airport and from then on, someone will be with you throughout the entire adoption process in China.
Beijing Tour: optional
Our representative will meet you at the Beijing airport and escort you to your hotel where you will join other families in your group. For families who wish to travel to see Beijing, tours will be arranged of the Forbidden City, Ming Tombs and the Great Wall. It is an incredible day of sight seeing that you will never forget! Standing on the Great Wall after hearing about the history behind it and seeing it stretch on for as far as the eye can see is an awe-inspiring moment!
Travel to Province
You will go to the province your child is from and stay approximately five days to do the legal process and obtain legal documents, and possibly get some local sightseeing in. You will also visit the orphanage where your child spent the first part of life, if the orphanage is in driving distance and the director allows. Keep in mind, that not all orphanages allow families to tour the facilities. Some allow you to take photos and some do not. Just go with the flow and realize that adopting your child is what it's all about.
Soon after your arrival in the province you will at last, meet and take custody of your child. Use this moment to ask all the questions you may have of her caregiver. This will be your only opportunity to speak to her.
Immigration Visa
Once you have obtained your adoption documents you will fly to Guangzhou where you will spend the remaining six days to take care of your child's medical exam, consulate appointment and obtain your child's immigrant visa. You will also do some local sightseeing and lots of shopping. Once you receive your child's visa you will travel home the next day.
