Guatamala Adoption Process
There are infants and children in Guatemala waiting to be adopted. You are matched with a child before your dossier is sent to Guatemala, but you must have all your adoption documents ready to be matched with a waiting child. You are matched by the agency, not the government so you have the opportunity to accept or decline a match with no repercussions if you choose to wait to adopt a different child.
Open Door works with 3 reputable private Guatemalan orphanages that refer us to the local birthmothers who have decided to place their children for adoption. The children are placed in these orphanages and are given excellent nurturing as well as good medical care during the adoption.
After your documents are sent to Guatemala, it usually takes 4 to 6 months to process the adoption. It can take longer if your case is assigned to a slow social worker in Guatemala or a slow judge – or if documents need to be re-done. It is not necessary for you to attend the court hearings – the adoption is completed by proxy before you ever travel to pick up your child.
