Lithuanian Adoption Program
Lithuania offers an opportunity to adopt school age Caucasian children and sibling groups through a very well regulated adoption process. Adoptions of younger children are also possible; however, Lithuania allows each agency to submit only two families each year to adopt children under six years of age. For these young children, the waiting list is two to three years. Families of Lithuanian decent will have approximately half the waiting time as other American adoptive families. The older the child are the shorter the list of waiting families. There is little waiting for school age children over age six or sibling a group of various ages.
Children are many times from small-city child care institutions (children’s homes) where they have been nurtured by directors and staff. The Lithuanian child care institutions have offered among the best care for their children that we have found anywhere in the former Soviet Union, and many of the older children are surprisingly well adjusted.
